A Tanzania safari is a dream come true for many travelers, offering unparalleled wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes. However, to make the most of your adventure, it’s essential to be well-prepared. Here’s everything you need to know before embarking on your Tanzania safari.
1. Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the timing of your visit can impact your experience:
- Dry Season (June to October): Ideal for wildlife viewing, especially the Great Migration in the Serengeti.
- Wet Season (November to May): Lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
- Calving Season (January to February): Witness thousands of wildebeest giving birth in the southern Serengeti.
2. Visa Requirements
Most travelers need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can apply for an e-Visa online or obtain one on arrival at major entry points. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and has two blank pages. Check the latest visa requirements based on your nationality before traveling.
3. Health and Safety Tips
- Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is required if traveling from an endemic area. Consult your doctor for recommendations on other vaccines, such as hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus.
- Malaria: Tanzania is a malaria zone, so take prophylaxis and use insect repellent.
- Travel Insurance: Ensure your policy covers medical emergencies, evacuations, and trip cancellations.
4. Currency and Payments
- The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted for safari payments and tips.
- Carry small bills for tipping and local purchases.
- Credit cards are accepted in larger lodges and cities, but cash is king in remote areas.
5. Safari Etiquette and Tips
- Respect Wildlife: Always follow your guide’s instructions and maintain a safe distance from animals.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear neutral-colored clothing and avoid bright colors or patterns.
- Stay Quiet: Keep noise to a minimum to avoid startling animals.
- Tipping: It’s customary to tip your guide, camp staff, and drivers. Ask your tour operator for recommended amounts.
6. Transportation and Getting Around
- Most safaris involve 4×4 game drives, which can be bumpy and dusty. Pack accordingly.
- Domestic flights are common for traveling between parks, especially to the Serengeti or Zanzibar.
- Road transfers are available but can be long due to Tanzania’s vast distances.
7. Accommodation Options
Tanzania offers a range of accommodations to suit every budget:
- Luxury Lodges: High-end comfort with stunning views and gourmet meals.
- Tented Camps: A blend of adventure and comfort, often located in remote areas.
- Budget Campsites: Basic facilities for adventurous travelers.
8. Must-Visit Parks and Reserves
- Serengeti National Park: Famous for the Great Migration and abundant wildlife.
- Ngorongoro Crater: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with dense wildlife populations.
- Tarangire National Park: Known for its elephant herds and baobab trees.

9. Cultural Considerations
- Tanzania is a culturally diverse country with over 120 ethnic groups. Respect local customs and traditions.
- Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.
- Learn a few Swahili phrases like “Jambo” (Hello) and “Asante” (Thank you) to connect with locals.
10. Environmental Responsibility
- Tanzania’s ecosystems are fragile. Avoid littering and follow the “leave no trace” principle.
- Support eco-friendly lodges and tour operators committed to conservation.
- Minimize plastic use by carrying a reusable water bottle and bags.
